Kompany praises Bayern's 'relegation playoff' spirit after dramatic comeback win
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany likened his team's full-time celebrations to those of a relegation playoff after they staged a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Mainz 4-3 on Saturday. The victory, sealed by goals from substitutes Michael Olise, Harry Kane, and Jamal Musiala, marked only the second time in the club's history that they have overturned a three-goal half-time deficit.
Kompany expressed his admiration for the team's mentality after a disastrous first half in which Mainz thoroughly dominated and deserved their commanding lead. "They celebrated as if it were a relegation playoff. I love that," the Belgian coach said, according to post-match reports. He acknowledged that his side could have conceded four or five goals before the break, despite having significant possession.
The turnaround was sparked by a triple substitution at halftime, a move Kompany revealed was pre-planned regardless of the scoreline. "It was planned. I don't want to just leave everyone on the bench or give them a vacation. Yet, at the same time, I don't want to take unnecessary risks," he explained. Olise, Kane, and Musiala all found the net in what Kompany described as a "brutal" second-half performance.
Kompany singled out Olise's exceptional quality, noting the winger has set a high standard. "Michael has set the bar high for himself, so I would've been disappointed if that didn't go in. But that's still absurd. It shouldn't be normal, but he made us get used to it," he said. The coach emphasized that the halftime team talk focused not on complex tactical analysis but on rediscovering quality and mentality, with the team accepting the fight and shedding any fear of injuries.
This result follows a similar fightback in a recent match against Freiburg, suggesting a growing resilience within Kompany's squad as the season reaches its climax. The win provides a significant morale boost ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. The dramatic nature of the victory, achieved with key players initially rested, underscores the squad depth and fighting spirit Kompany is instilling as Bayern compete on multiple fronts.
