Kompany praises teenage midfielder Ndiaye after first Bayern start
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has praised 18-year-old midfielder Bara Ndiaye following the teenager's first start for the club in a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Mainz. The Senegalese youngster, who joined the Bundesliga champions from Gambian academy Gambinos Stars in January, played 77 minutes in a physically demanding match, earning positive remarks from his coach about his adaptability and composure.
Kompany acknowledged the challenging nature of the fixture for a young player, stating the match represented the "toughest possible test." According to the Belgian coach, speaking after the game, Ndiaye managed the pace well and showed improvement as the match progressed. "I thought he did quite well on the ball and kept up with the pace of the game," Kompany said. "He also showed a reaction in the second half. It was a good appearance in such a difficult game for a young player. He can be proud."
The manager was keen to deflect pressure from the academy signing, emphasizing that responsibility lies with the team's established stars. "For me, there's no responsibility on his shoulders. It's up to the experienced players to step up," Kompany added. Ndiaye's inclusion came amid a squad crisis at Bayern, with several key midfielders absent through injury or suspension, forcing Kompany to delve into the club's younger options.
Ndiaye's journey to the Allianz Arena is a notable one, having been signed directly from Gambinos Stars at the start of the year without a previously prominent profile in European football. His rapid integration and immediate first-team involvement underscore both the club's current personnel issues and their confidence in his potential. However, he is not registered for Bayern's Champions League squad, limiting his immediate involvement to domestic competitions.
The performance offers a glimpse into Bayern's medium-term planning, as the club looks to rebuild and integrate younger talent following a trophyless season. While not expected to be a regular starter once the senior squad is at full strength, Ndiaye's successful debut provides Kompany with a viable option from the bench and a player to develop for the future. His continued development will be monitored closely as Bayern aims to reclaim the Bundesliga title next season.
