Ibrahima Konaté has officially announced his departure from Liverpool, though his destination remains undisclosed. The centre-back revealed his exit following the Netherlands’ 1-0 victory over Algeria, using a post-match press conference to confirm the news.
Konaté’s announcement came amidst criticism of how the news of Arne Slot’s appointment as Liverpool manager was leaked to the media. He stated he learned of the decision through news reports, simultaneously with the general public, while still travelling. “I got off the plane on Saturday afternoon and saw the news leaking. I wasn’t even aware of it myself. Apparently, the decision was made in the morning,” Konaté explained, according to reports.
The 25-year-old defender expressed frustration with the current media landscape, suggesting a prioritisation of speed over accuracy. He specifically criticised what he termed a “journalist/pseudo-journalist Italian” for their role in disseminating the information. Konaté has been a Liverpool player since 2021, joining from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £36 million.
During his time at Anfield, Konaté has made 86 appearances across all competitions, forming a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk when fit. He has won the FA Cup and League Cup with the club, contributing to their recent success under Jürgen Klopp. However, injuries have hampered his consistency, limiting his playing time in key matches. His departure leaves Liverpool seeking to bolster their central defensive options ahead of the new season, with Slot inheriting a squad in transition.
Konaté’s next move is currently unknown, though several clubs across Europe could be interested in acquiring the French international. His physical attributes and aerial ability make him a valuable asset, and he will likely seek a club where he can secure regular first-team football.
