Liverpool have confirmed that Ibrahima Konate will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of June. The announcement, made on Sunday afternoon via the club’s official website, brings an end to the centre-back’s five-year spell at Anfield.
Konate had been linked with a potential contract extension, but a resolution could not be reached, despite reported interest from Real Madrid which ultimately faded. News of his expected departure emerged earlier in the week, and the club’s statement now officially confirms the move.
Signed from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, Konate made a total of 183 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals. He was a key part of the team that won the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season, as well as securing FA Cup, Carabao Cup (twice), and FA Community Shield victories.
The club’s statement expressed gratitude for Konate’s contribution and wished him well for the future. His departure comes alongside those of Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah, both also leaving upon the expiration of their contracts this summer. Liverpool also recently confirmed the departure of head coach Arne Slot, with Andoni Iraola heavily favoured to take over as manager.
Following the announcement, Konate posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing his gratitude to the club, his teammates, and the supporters. He spoke of his pride in representing Liverpool and highlighted both the joyous and difficult moments he experienced during his time at Anfield, including personal tragedies such as the loss of his father and teammate Diogo Jota’s injury. He expressed regret at not being able to say goodbye to fans at the final game, but vowed to carry Liverpool with him in his future endeavours.
Konate’s exit creates a void in Liverpool’s defensive options, and Iraola will likely prioritise finding a replacement during the transfer window. The departure of multiple key players signals a period of transition for the club as they look to build for the future.
