Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is widely expected to join Real Madrid this summer, with Jose Mourinho reportedly identifying him as a key signing, according to reports emerging last week. The move comes after contract talks between Konate and Liverpool were reportedly ‘killed’ due to financial disagreements and additional costs related to agent fees.
Konate, who arrived at Anfield with a strong reputation, experienced a dip in form during the 2025/26 campaign, leading many Liverpool supporters to accept his departure with relative ease. However, his exit leaves a void in the Liverpool squad, particularly with another centre-back also anticipated to leave, leaving new head coach Andoni Iraola with limited options in that position – Virgil van Dijk and Giovanni Leoni are currently the only confirmed centre-backs.
To address this, Liverpool are reportedly compiling a shortlist of four potential replacements, including Tottenham Hotspur’s 19-year-old Luka Vuskovic. The club are also ‘monitoring’ Vuskovic’s situation, while Goncalo Inacio, a long-term target, remains ‘high on the list’. Sam Beukema and Murillo have also been identified as possible additions to Iraola’s squad.
Football Insider reported that Konate was seeking an ‘increased’ salary in any new deal, but Liverpool were unwilling to offer terms beyond his existing contract. The additional expenses associated with the transfer, including agent fees, ultimately led to the breakdown in negotiations. Konate recently revealed he struggled with depression during the past season, following personal tragedies, which may have contributed to his diminished form. He stated in an interview with France Inter radio that depression can affect anyone, regardless of financial status, and emphasized the importance of open discussion about mental health.
Konate joined Liverpool in 2021 from RB Leipzig, quickly establishing himself as a key player under Jurgen Klopp. His physical presence and aerial ability made him a valuable asset, though consistency proved an issue at times. The potential sale of Konate will provide Liverpool with funds to invest in a new centre-back, as Iraola looks to reshape the squad ahead of the new season. The arrival of Jeremy Jacquet was expected to bolster the defensive ranks, but further reinforcements are clearly needed.
