Manuel Koné is poised to realize a long-held dream by starting for France against Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday, marking his first appearance in a World Cup match. The 25-year-old midfielder has overcome a recent thigh injury to earn a place in Didier Deschamps’ starting eleven, reportedly as a replacement for Aurélien Tchouaméni in a tactical decision rather than due to any injury concern for the Real Madrid player.
Koné’s journey to this point began with aspirations nurtured during his time at the Clairefontaine national football center, where he envisioned representing his country on the world stage. He has steadily risen through the ranks since his debut for the national team in September, becoming a key figure in midfield during the autumn qualifying matches, earning four starts in six games. A thigh injury sustained in March threatened his participation in the tournament, forcing him to miss the pre-tournament tour of the United States.
Deschamps maintained regular contact with Koné throughout his recovery, emphasizing the importance of managing the injury and ensuring he returned to full fitness. The injury initially occurred in February, with Koné briefly sidelined before returning to action under pressure from his then-club manager, Gian Piero Gasperini. This led to a recurrence of the injury, prompting Deschamps to address the potential impact on his World Cup hopes.
Florent Ghisolfi, who signed Koné for AS Roma in the summer of 2024 and is now director of football at Sunderland, praised the player’s ability to absorb pressure and his physical attributes. Ghisolfi highlighted Koné’s strength in both attack and defense, his ability to drive the team forward, and his spatial awareness. He believes Koné has the potential to become even more influential with improved passing range, but already possesses the athleticism to contribute both offensively and defensively.
Koné spent his five days of downtime before joining the national team in Monaco, focusing on physical conditioning and recovery. Several of Europe’s top clubs are reportedly monitoring the player’s progress, anticipating a potential move for him this summer, with his performances continuing to attract significant attention.
