Borussia Mönchengladbach have secured the signing of Yukhym Konoplia from Shakhtar Donetsk on a free transfer, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Friday. The Ukrainian international has agreed to a contract with Die Fohlen that will run until the summer of 2029.
Konoplia, a 26-year-old right-back, arrives at Borussia-Park after a sustained period with Shakhtar, where he established himself as a regular starter. He has also represented Ukraine at international level, gaining experience in both Champions League and national team competitions. The move represents a significant addition to Gladbach’s defensive options ahead of the upcoming season.
Rouven Schröder, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s head of sports, highlighted Konoplia’s attributes upon the announcement. “Yukhym is a physically strong full-back who is always ready to give his all,” Schröder stated. “He is able to bring plenty of experience and leadership qualities to the table, which he’s gained as a regular starter for the reigning Ukrainian champions, including in the Champions League and with the national team.”
Konoplia himself expressed his enthusiasm for joining the German club. “I’m looking forward to joining Borussia. They are a big club with a rich history and incredible fans,” Konoplia said. “I can’t really describe how I’m feeling at the moment. It will take a few days before it’s all sunk in properly. But, I’m definitely looking forward to enjoying my time at Borussia.”
Borussia Mönchengladbach finished tenth in the Bundesliga last season, a campaign that saw them struggle for consistency. The acquisition of Konoplia is part of a broader effort to strengthen the squad and improve their defensive stability. His arrival provides competition for places at right-back and adds a seasoned European competitor to the team. This transfer allows Mönchengladbach to bolster their squad without a transfer fee, a valuable asset in the current financial climate.
Konoplia’s departure from Shakhtar Donetsk comes amid ongoing political instability in Ukraine, which has impacted the Ukrainian Premier League. He leaves a successful spell in Donetsk, having contributed to the club’s domestic dominance in recent years. His move to Germany offers him a new challenge and the opportunity to compete in one of Europe’s top leagues.
