French defender Tanguy Kouassi is poised to return to Ligue 1 with Lille, according to reports from L’Équipe and confirmed by Le Petit Lillois. The 24-year-old is in advanced discussions with the northern French club, potentially ending a four-year spell with Sevilla that has been hampered by injury. Kouassi initially joined Sevilla in the summer of 2022 from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €16 million.
Kouassi’s time in Andalusia has seen him feature in just 62 matches across all competitions, failing to fully establish himself as a regular starter. Sevilla are reportedly willing to allow Kouassi to terminate the final year of his contract, which runs until 2027, facilitating the move. The club’s willingness to agree to a departure suggests they do not see Kouassi as a key part of their future plans.
Before his move to Germany, Kouassi came through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, leaving the club in 2020 on a free transfer to join Bayern Munich. While at Bayern, opportunities were limited, prompting his subsequent transfer to Sevilla in search of more consistent playing time. However, recurring hamstring injuries have significantly impacted his availability and form in Spain.
A medical examination will be a crucial step in finalizing the transfer to Lille, given Kouassi’s recent fitness concerns. Lille will be hoping Kouassi can rediscover his potential and provide much-needed reinforcement to their defensive options. Should the move be completed, it represents a chance for Kouassi to reignite his career in familiar surroundings and contribute to a club challenging for European qualification.
