Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in signing 16-year-old Hertha BSC midfielder Kennet Eichhorn, with head coach Niko Kovač publicly acknowledging the player’s potential. Kovač’s comments came during an appearance on the Bild podcast ‘Phrasenmäher’, where he was asked directly about the possibility of Eichhorn moving to the Signal Iduna Park.
While Kovač refrained from detailed discussion due to the player’s existing contract, he offered a clear endorsement of the young talent. He noted a shared connection to Hertha BSC, having previously played for the club himself, before stating, “He’s a great player who has huge potential and, like a few others, is the future of German football.” This praise fuels speculation that Dortmund are seriously considering a move for Eichhorn this summer.
Eichhorn has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the 2. Bundesliga, making 18 appearances for Hertha BSC. His performances have attracted attention from several top European clubs, according to reports, but Dortmund’s interest appears particularly strong. The midfielder’s contract reportedly includes a release clause valued between €10-12 million, a figure that could facilitate a relatively straightforward transfer.
Hertha BSC are currently undergoing a period of restructuring following their relegation from the Bundesliga last season, and retaining young talents like Eichhorn will be crucial for their long-term project. However, the financial incentive of triggering the release clause may prove too tempting for the club, especially if Eichhorn expresses a desire to move to a team competing at a higher level. Dortmund, consistently competing in the Champions League, presents an attractive option for a player aiming to develop his career.
Should Eichhorn join Borussia Dortmund, he would likely be integrated into the club’s youth setup initially, with opportunities to train with the first team and potentially make appearances in the Bundesliga and European competitions. The move would represent a significant step up in competition and provide a platform for the young midfielder to further hone his skills and potentially become a key player for both Dortmund and the German national team in the future.
