Tom Krauß has completed a permanent transfer to 1. FC Köln from Mainz 05, the club confirmed on Thursday.
The move follows a successful loan spell with the Billy Goats during the 2025/26 season, with Köln triggering a mandatory purchase option after securing their place in the Bundesliga for another year.
Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, however the contract will keep Krauß at the RheinEnergieStadion until 2029. The midfielder quickly became a key figure for Köln during his loan, making 27 appearances across all competitions.
Köln managing director Thomas Kessler praised Krauß’s commitment and character, stating the player brings “a great deal of emotion, passion and identification both on and off the pitch.” Kessler specifically highlighted Krauß’s willingness to play through a knee injury during the crucial relegation battle, emphasizing his value to the squad.
Krauß himself expressed his relief and happiness at the club’s survival, and his excitement about continuing his career with Köln. He stated his priority was to maintain the club’s Bundesliga status, and he is now looking forward to the challenges ahead.
Prior to joining Köln on loan, Krauß had established himself as a promising talent in the Bundesliga with Mainz, progressing through their youth academy. He made over 50 appearances for Mainz before the loan move, demonstrating his versatility in midfield. The transfer represents a significant boost for Köln’s squad depth, providing stability in a key position.
This permanent deal solidifies Krauß’s position within the Köln midfield and provides the club with a long-term option as they look to build for the future. It also allows coach Timo Schultz to continue developing a team around the energetic midfielder.
