Juventus are in discussions with Al-Ahli regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Franck Kessie, whose contract with the Saudi Arabian club expires on June 30th. Representatives of the player have reportedly offered his services to the Juventus directors, according to reports originating from Italy.
This pursuit comes nearly a decade after current Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti first expressed interest in Kessie when the Ivorian was a breakout star at Atalanta. At that time, Spalletti was managing Roma, but Milan ultimately secured Kessie’s signature. Now, the two could finally link up as Spalletti seeks to bolster his squad with experienced, winning players.
Kessie departed Italy in 2022 after a successful five-year spell with Milan, which culminated in a Serie A title in 2022, where he contributed six goals. A stint at Barcelona followed, yielding a La Liga title and Supercopa, before a move to Al-Ahli. In Saudi Arabia, Kessie quickly established himself as a key player, becoming captain and winning two Asian Champions League titles. He has totaled 26 goals and 15 assists in 119 appearances for Al-Ahli.
While his leadership and determination remain consistent with his reputation in Italian football, questions have been raised regarding his adaptation to the faster pace of European football, given the comparatively slower tempo in the Saudi League. Statistics suggest a tactical shift in his game, with less emphasis on defensive work and more focus on attacking runs. He has shown increased attacking output, averaging a third more goals and assists per game than during his time at Milan. At 30 years old in December, and having missed only one game through injury in three years, Kessie appears physically fit and capable of reintegrating into European competition. The upcoming World Cup, where he will captain the Ivory Coast, will serve as a key indicator of his current form and readiness.
Juventus are seeking to reinforce their midfield options, and Kessie’s experience and leadership qualities align with Spalletti’s requirements. His potential arrival could provide valuable depth and competition in the center of the park.
