Juventus obligated to sign Loïs Openda after clause triggered
Juventus are now contractually obligated to sign striker Loïs Openda permanently from RB Leipzig this summer, according to multiple reports. The obligatory purchase clause in the Belgian's loan deal was activated following Juventus's 1-0 victory over Atalanta on Saturday, a result that mathematically guaranteed the club a top-ten finish in Serie A, the specific condition required to trigger the fee.
The obligation means Juventus must pay RB Leipzig a fixed transfer fee of €40.6 million, which will be spread across the club's next four financial years. This sum is in addition to the initial loan fee of €3.3 million already paid last summer. Including potential bonuses, the total package for Openda is expected to reach approximately €46 million, as reported by sources close to the deal.
For Leipzig, the transaction represents a profitable piece of business. The German club signed Openda from French side RC Lens in 2023 for a fee in the region of €40 million. His subsequent sale to Juventus, even after a challenging season for the player, secures the Bundesliga side a modest capital gain on their initial investment.
Openda's move to Turin has not unfolded as either party envisioned. After a prolific 2023/24 campaign at Leipzig where he scored 24 goals and provided seven assists, his form has sharply declined in Italy. In 33 appearances across all competitions for Juventus, the 26-year-old has found the net only twice. He has been restricted to just nine starts and has yet to complete a full 90 minutes in a Serie A match.
This stark contrast in output has led to a significant shift in Juventus's plans. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Italian club is already preparing to sell Openda in the upcoming transfer window, despite the obligation to first complete his permanent signing from Leipzig. It is understood that clubs in Italy, Spain, and England have registered an interest in the forward, potentially offering Juventus a quick route to recoup a portion of their significant outlay.
The sequence of events underscores the complex and often precarious nature of modern transfer dealings. Juventus, bound by a clause tied to their league position, are now compelled to invest heavily in a player who has struggled to adapt, only to immediately place him on the market. For Openda, the priority will be to rediscover his scoring touch, whether in Turin or at a new destination, to reignite a career that stalled dramatically after his high-profile move.
