Juventus emerge as frontrunners for free agent Leon Goretzka
Juventus are reportedly leading the race to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer this summer, according to trusted Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. The development comes as a blow to Premier League suitors Arsenal and Manchester United, who had both been strongly linked with the 31-year-old German international.
Goretzka's contract at the Allianz Arena expires at the end of the season, making him available without a transfer fee. Di Marzio, speaking via Sky Italia and relayed by TuttoJuve, revealed that Juventus are actively working on several deals and have established contacts regarding Goretzka's situation. The Serie A club's pursuit, however, is said to be contingent on them qualifying for next season's Champions League, which would enhance their financial strength and appeal to a player accustomed to Europe's elite competition.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United had been credited with a serious interest in the experienced midfielder. Sources informed TEAMtalk in March that Arsenal's director, Andrea Berta, was preparing a formal offer for Goretzka, with manager Mikel Arteta reportedly keen on integrating him into his plans. Manchester United's long-standing admiration for the player was also noted, with journalist Pete O'Rourke previously suggesting a move to Old Trafford might appeal more to the player than a switch to North London.
Goretzka has spent seven seasons at Bayern Munich since joining from Schalke 04 in 2018, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020. While still a key figure, his future has been the subject of speculation for several months. His availability on a free transfer represents a significant market opportunity for a player of his calibre and experience.
The potential move to Turin would see Goretzka reunite with former Bayern coach Max Allegri, should the Italian remain in charge. For Juventus, securing a player of Goretzka's profile without a fee aligns with a prudent transfer strategy and would add considerable quality and physical presence to their midfield. For Arsenal and Manchester United, it signals the need to look elsewhere in their searches for midfield reinforcements, with Newcastle's Sandro Tonali also mentioned as a target for both English clubs.
The coming weeks will be crucial, with Juventus's final league position likely to be a decisive factor. Goretzka's decision is expected to be made after the season concludes, with Bayern Munich still involved in the latter stages of the Champions League, where the midfielder is set to feature against Real Madrid.
