Juventus trigger €40.6m obligation to sign Lois Openda from RB Leipzig
Juventus have officially triggered their obligation to sign Belgian striker Lois Openda permanently from RB Leipzig for a fee of €40.6 million. The clause was activated on Saturday following Sassuolo's defeat to Genoa, which mathematically guaranteed Juventus a top-ten Serie A finish this season. Openda, who initially joined on a €3.3 million loan last August, is now tied to the Turin club on a contract until 2030, earning a reported €4 million per season.
This permanent transfer comes despite Openda having fallen completely out of favour under manager Paolo Montero, who replaced the sacked Massimiliano Allegri. The 24-year-old has not played a single minute in Juventus's last five matches and is considered the lowest option in the attacking hierarchy, behind the likes of Dusan Vlahovic, Arkadiusz Milik, and Moise Kean. His last start was nearly two months ago, making the activation of the costly clause a significant paradox in a disappointing season for the club.
The obligation was conditional on Juventus securing a place in the top half of the Serie A table. With six matches remaining, Sassuolo's loss created an 18-point gap that cannot be closed, formally satisfying the condition. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the club had no mechanism to avoid the purchase once the sporting target was met, locking them into the major financial commitment.
Openda arrived with a strong reputation following a prolific 2022-23 season with Lens in Ligue 1, where he scored 21 goals, which prompted a €43 million move to RB Leipzig. He struggled to replicate that form in the Bundesliga, however, scoring just six times before his loan to Italy. His time at Juventus has been similarly unproductive, with no goals in his limited appearances, leading to his current ostracisation from the squad.
For Juventus, the forced purchase represents a complex and costly problem for the upcoming summer transfer window. The club's new sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, is now tasked with finding a solution for a player the technical staff does not rate, likely necessitating a loan or a cut-price sale that would see Juventus incur a significant financial loss. The deal also impacts the club's budgeting and squad planning for the next manager, with Thiago Motta widely expected to take charge.
For RB Leipzig, the transaction concludes a successful piece of business, recouping nearly the entire fee they paid to Lens just a year ago for a player who did not fit their system. The funds will aid their own summer rebuilding plans. The immediate implication for Openda is an uncertain future, with a pre-season at Juventus likely serving as an audition for a role he is not expected to keep, making a departure in the coming months the most probable outcome.
