Juventus Reclaim Top Four Chase with Crucial Win Over Genoa
Juventus closed the gap on the top four with a 2-0 victory over Genoa at the Allianz Stadium, with goals from Gleison Bremer and Weston McKennie securing a vital three points in the race for Champions League qualification.
First-half goals from Bremer and Weston McKennie inside the opening 17 minutes proved decisive. The win, combined with a draw for Como, moves Juventus to within a single point of fourth place in the Serie A table.
The match was effectively decided in the opening 17 minutes. Bremer opened the scoring in the 4th minute, heading home from a corner after a touch from a Genoa defender wrong-footed goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. The lead was doubled in the 17th minute through McKennie, who finished a swift counter-attack with a first-time finish from the edge of the box after a low cross from the right by Francisco Conceicao.
Juventus, under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, dominated the first half and could have extended their lead before the break, with McKennie and Timothy Weah both missing clear chances. Genoa, managed by former Roma teammate Daniele De Rossi, offered little threat for much of the contest.
The second half saw Genoa awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after a VAR review for a foul by Bremer. However, Juventus's returning goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, making his first appearance after 43 days out, saved Martin Hongla's spot-kick to preserve the clean sheet and the victory. Genoa's best chance, a header from a corner, was also saved by Di Gregorio late on.
The victory is a significant boost for Juventus in their pursuit of Champions League football. The win, coupled with a 0-0 draw for fourth-placed Como, puts Spalletti's side just one point off the coveted top-four spot. The result also marks a positive return for Di Gregorio, who made several key saves and will be expected to retain his place ahead of the injured Mattia Perin, who was forced off at half-time with a calf issue. McKennie, however, will miss the next match against Atalanta after picking up a yellow card and a suspension.
For Genoa, the result leaves them without a win in five matches, though they remain seven points clear of the relegation zone. The defeat will be a disappointment for De Rossi, who was facing his former Roma manager Spalletti in a touchline duel of master and apprentice.
Juventus will now look ahead to a crucial run of fixtures, with their Champions League hopes firmly in their own hands.
