Juventus Trigger Purchase Clause to Sign Loïs Openda Permanently
Juventus have triggered the clause to sign striker Loïs Openda on a permanent deal from RB Leipzig, according to reports in Germany. The Italian club are obligated to pay a fee reported to be just over €40 million for the Belgian international, who spent the 2024/25 season on loan in Turin.
The deal, first reported by Sky Germany, was automatically triggered by a clause in the loan agreement that was activated by Juventus securing a top-ten finish in Serie A. The total fee, which includes a €4 million loan fee paid last summer, could rise further with the addition of performance-related add-ons.
Openda, 26, joined Juventus on a season-long loan last summer after a single season at RB Leipzig. The German club signed him from RC Lens for a reported €40 million in the summer of 2023, and have now recouped their investment with this permanent sale. The forward has found game time limited in Italy, scoring twice in 33 appearances across all competitions for Juventus this season.
The move makes permanent a transfer that has been in motion since last summer. Juventus paid an initial €4 million loan fee to secure Openda's services for the season, with the understanding that a top-half league finish would trigger the mandatory purchase. The agreement provided a structured payment plan for Juventus, spreading the financial commitment over multiple years.
For RB Leipzig, the deal represents a swift and profitable resolution to their investment. Having signed Openda for a club-record fee in 2023, they have now recouped their initial outlay after just one year, with the player spending the season elsewhere. The German club has a reputation for identifying and developing talent, and this transaction continues their model of acquiring and selling players for significant fees.
For Juventus, the move represents a long-term commitment to a player they have had under observation for some time. Despite a modest goal return this season, the club's hierarchy, led by sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, sees Openda's physical and technical profile as a key component for their future attack. His transition to Serie A has been a period of adaptation, but the club is betting on his potential to become a more prolific scorer in a system more tailored to his strengths.
The permanent deal concludes a transfer saga that began last summer and provides Juventus with a focal point for their attack. The structure of the deal also allows Juventus to manage their financial commitments while securing a player they believe can develop into a key figure in their forward line for years to come.
