Lazio are considering a move for Nicolò Zaniolo, despite the player’s previous reluctance to join the club, according to reports in Italy. The former Roma attacker is currently experiencing a strained relationship with Udinese following his permanent transfer from Galatasaray for a fee of €5 million.
Zaniolo’s move to Udinese has been complicated by disagreements over his salary. He currently earns €1.2 million per season, significantly less than the €3 million he received at Galatasaray, and despite promises of a raise from Udinese, no agreement has been reached. This impasse has opened the door for other clubs, with Lazio emerging as a strong contender.
This potential move represents a significant shift in Zaniolo’s stance, as he previously rejected overtures from Lazio, publicly stating a move would be “unthinkable” due to his history with Roma. However, the arrival of Rino Gattuso as Lazio’s manager, who is reportedly a keen admirer of the player, has altered the situation.
Udinese are currently unwilling to sell Zaniolo, viewing him as an integral part of their project, and would also be obligated to share 50% of any future resale fee with Galatasaray. Despite this, Zaniolo is prepared to push for a move if his salary demands are not met. Napoli have also expressed interest, but Lazio are currently the most proactive pursuers.
Lazio’s ability to complete the transfer hinges on player sales, as the club operates under strict financial constraints. They are currently unable to make any significant purchases without first generating funds through departures. Udinese have not set a specific price tag for Zaniolo, but his valuation is estimated to be between €18-20 million. Zaniolo enjoyed a successful spell with Roma, notably scoring the winning goal in the 2022 Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.
