Bundesliga Relegation Battle Intensifies as Seven Clubs Face Final Four Games
The Bundesliga relegation fight has narrowed to seven clubs with four matchdays remaining, with bottom-placed FC Heidenheim facing the most immediate threat of the drop. According to an analysis by Bulinews, Heidenheim, with 19 points, must avoid defeat at home to FC St. Pauli this weekend to have any realistic hope of survival; a loss would confirm their relegation. The other clubs embroiled in the battle are VfL Wolfsburg (24 points), St. Pauli (26 points), and a quartet tied on 31 points: 1. FC Köln, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Heidenheim's situation is the most precarious, with their survival threat assessed at 95 percent. Their recent form has offered little hope, with a draw against SC Freiburg following a morale-boosting win over Union Berlin. Even a draw this weekend would leave them needing a miracle on the final day against Bayern Munich. Directly above them, VfL Wolfsburg are focusing on securing 16th place and a relegation playoff berth, a position they successfully defended via the playoff in 2017 and 2018. Their threat is rated at 60 percent, with key fixtures against Bayern Munich, Freiburg, and a final-day clash with St. Pauli looming.
St. Pauli, currently occupying that 16th spot, have a 45 percent chance of falling into the playoff or lower, according to the analysis. Their primary issue has been a lack of goals, with a league-low 26 scored this season. While their run-in appears favourable on paper, including matches against Heidenheim and Mainz, their inability to convert chances was evident in a recent 1-1 draw with Köln. They remain five points from direct safety, making a cluster of points in their final games essential.
The four teams on 31 points are not yet secure, though their risks vary significantly. 1. FC Köln, in 12th, are considered the safest of the group with just a 10 percent relegation threat, largely due to their superior attacking output. However, they will be without injured striker Ragnar Ache for the remainder of the season, placing more responsibility on players like Jakub Kaminski and Saïd El Mala. Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen face a tougher path, with each given a 25 percent chance of being dragged into the fight.
Hamburg's final four opponents all currently reside in the top eight, offering no straightforward fixtures. Werder Bremen, buoyed by a derby win over Hamburg, face a difficult schedule bookended by matches against Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund, though a home game against Augsburg represents a key opportunity. Borussia Mönchengladbach, with the leakiest defence of the group having conceded 50 goals, are assigned a 15 percent threat. Their mission starts with a crucial away match at Wolfsburg this weekend, before facing Dortmund, Augsburg, and Hoffenheim.
The coming weekend will bring immense clarity, particularly from the Heidenheim versus St. Pauli clash. A result for St. Pauli would push Heidenheim to the brink, while a win for the hosts would blow the battle wide open and drag the Hamburg club deeper into trouble. The intricate web of fixtures, including direct clashes between rivals like Wolfsburg and St. Pauli on the final day, ensures the fight for survival will likely go down to the wire, affecting the futures of several historic Bundesliga institutions.
