AS Roma have confirmed the permanent signing of forward Donyell Malen from Aston Villa for a total fee of €27 million. The club announced on Tuesday they have triggered the option to buy the Netherlands international, who had been on loan in the Italian capital since January.
Malen’s transfer consists of a €25 million fee, in addition to the initial €2 million paid for the loan spell. The 26-year-old quickly established himself as a key player for Roma, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists in 20 Serie A appearances. His arrival coincided with a significant upturn in form for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, helping them secure Champions League qualification on the final day of the season.
Malen joined Aston Villa from Borussia Dortmund in August 2023, but struggled to make a consistent impact in the Premier League, featuring sporadically under Unai Emery. Prior to his move to Villa, the forward had enjoyed a productive spell in Germany with Dortmund, scoring 25 goals in 146 appearances across all competitions. He initially rose to prominence with PSV Eindhoven, where his goalscoring record attracted interest from several top European clubs.
According to L’Équipe, Malen proved to be the most effective winter signing amongst Europe’s major leagues, surpassing the likes of Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson in terms of goal contributions. The new contract will keep Malen at the Stadio Olimpico until 2030. This move provides Roma with a long-term solution in attack and solidifies their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League, while also allowing Malen to continue his impressive form in Italy.
Roma finished third in Serie A last season, narrowly securing a Champions League spot. The club will be hoping Malen’s goals can fire them to further success both domestically and in Europe.
