Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been named the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season, the league announced on Monday. The Belgian shot-stopper, who arrived at Old Trafford from Antwerp for a reported €21 million, has kept nine clean sheets in his debut season with the club.
Lammens’s award recognizes his immediate impact on United’s defense, providing a level of stability the team had been seeking. The club confirmed the honour via their social media channels, highlighting the significance of the signing. He beat out competition from several other notable new arrivals, including Viktor Gyökeres, Joao Pedro, Antoine Semenyo, and French players Adrien Truffert and Rayan Cherki for the award.
Cherki, formerly of Lyon, was also nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award but lost out to teammate Nico O’Reilly. This marks the second individual accolade Cherki has missed out on this season, adding to a frustrating campaign for the young Frenchman despite promising performances.
The award for Lammens comes as Manchester United secure a Champions League spot for next season, with 45% of Premier League teams qualifying for European competition. The signing of Lammens has been widely praised as a shrewd piece of business by United, addressing a long-standing need for a reliable goalkeeper. His consistent performances have been a key factor in the team’s improved defensive record and ultimately, their success in securing a top-four finish. This award further validates the club’s recruitment strategy and suggests a period of greater stability in a position that has often been a source of concern for the Red Devils.
