Newcastle United are reportedly surprised by Arsenal’s interest in midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with club officials describing their conduct as “stunned” and “flabbergasted” according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie. Reports emerged at the end of June suggesting Arsenal had made a verbal offer for the Newcastle captain, though this came as something of a surprise given a lack of prior links.
Newcastle quickly rejected the initial approach and the matter appeared to subside, particularly with Guimaraes involved with the Brazilian national team. However, concerns grew within the Newcastle hierarchy that the 28-year-old could begin to push for a move, a situation exacerbated by indications that Guimaraes was receptive to a transfer to the Gunners. This potential move represents a significant opportunity for Guimaraes to join a club consistently competing for major trophies, potentially his last chance at that level.
Guimaraes officially informed Newcastle of his desire to pursue a transfer to Arsenal earlier this week, a blow to the club despite their public stance that he is not for sale. While a bid from Arsenal is anticipated, the Gunners are hesitant to overspend, considering Guimaraes’ age and their existing midfield options. Downie reports that Arsenal have not yet made direct contact with Newcastle, with all communication thus far occurring through intermediaries, leaving the Newcastle board feeling unsettled.
The situation is further complicated by the involvement of superagent Kia Joorabchian, who has a known affinity for Arsenal, alongside Guimaraes’ representative Alexis Malavolta. A recent social media post featuring the pair has fueled speculation. Crucially, Guimaraes’ motivation is reportedly footballing, not financial, and he is keen to maintain a positive relationship with Newcastle, avoiding a repeat of Alexander Isak’s previous attempts to force a move.
While open to the possibility of joining Arsenal and challenging for major honours, Guimaraes is not actively agitating for a transfer at this stage. Newcastle could reportedly demand as much as €100 million for their captain, reflecting his importance to the team, though Downie acknowledges that a deal is far from certain. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be willing to meet such a valuation for a player approaching 29.
