Contract talks for Liverpool's Konate hit impasse, reports Ornstein
Negotiations between Liverpool and defender Ibrahima Konate over a new contract have reached an impasse, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. The France international's current deal expires this summer, throwing his long-term future at Anfield into significant doubt.
Ornstein's report, delivered on NBC Sports, contradicts recent speculation from other quarters that a deal was close. Just days earlier, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano had stated that talks were moving to their final stages, with salary almost agreed and only the length of the contract and minor clauses to be clarified. Romano had asserted that Liverpool remained the clear favourites to retain the 26-year-old centre-back.
The conflicting updates create a cloud of uncertainty over a key position for manager Arne Slot. Konate has been a mainstay in Liverpool's defence this season, forming a regular partnership with Virgil van Dijk due to a shortage of alternatives. The club's defensive ranks have been thinned by the season-ending injury to summer signing Giovanni Leoni and the collapse of a move for Marc Guehi last year.
Konate's form during this heavy workload has come under scrutiny. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was particularly critical following the team's recent Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, stating that Konate "makes a mistake every game" and describing his season-long performances as "awful." Such comments highlight the pressure on the player amid the stalled contract situation.
From a club perspective, securing Konate's future would provide stability in a problem area. Liverpool have already agreed a deal to sign defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes this summer, but losing Konate on a free transfer would force them back into the market for another experienced centre-back. His potential availability has previously attracted reported interest from clubs like Real Madrid.
For Konate, the impasse suggests dissatisfaction with the terms on offer or a desire to consider his options as he enters his prime years. A free transfer would make him an attractive proposition for many elite European clubs. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Liverpool can break the deadlock or if one of their first-choice defenders will depart at the end of his contract.
