Atlético Madrid have completed the signing of midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon, the Spanish club announced on Saturday morning. The 27-year-old has signed a contract with Atlético that runs until June 30, 2031. According to Marca, the transfer fee is €40 million.
Atlético released a statement praising Hjulmand’s arrival, highlighting his physical strength, ball-winning ability, and tactical awareness. The club also noted his anticipation skills and passing range, qualities they believe will significantly benefit the team. Atlético finished fourth in La Liga last season, behind Villarreal, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
Hjulmand joined Sporting Lisbon in 2023 and featured prominently for the Portuguese side last season, making 45 appearances in all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League. Prior to his time in Portugal, the Danish international spent two seasons with Lecce in Italy (2021-2023) and three years with Admira Wacker in Austria (2018-2021). He began his professional career in his native Denmark with Copenhagen.
The move provides Atlético with a strong defensive midfield option as they prepare for another campaign in both La Liga and European competition. Hjulmand’s arrival adds depth and quality to Diego Simeone’s squad, potentially solidifying their midfield for years to come.
