Ally Samatta's Le Havre Future in Doubt Amid Nice Stalemate
Tanzanian striker Ally Samatta has cast fresh uncertainty over his future at Le Havre after scoring his first Ligue 1 goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Nice on Saturday. The 31-year-old forward, who joined the Normandy side last summer, found the net in the 41st minute at the Allianz Riviera, but his contract situation remains unresolved with his current deal set to expire this June. According to sources close to the club, discussions over an extension have stalled, putting Samatta in a position to leave as a free agent.
Samatta's opener, a well-taken finish that showcased his predatory instincts, was not enough to secure all three points for Le Havre, as Nice defender Ali Abdi equalized in the second half. The goal marked a positive personal milestone for the experienced striker in what has been a challenging season, but it did little to lift his team from 15th place in the table, just four points above the relegation playoff spot. His performance, however, is likely to attract attention from other clubs as the summer transfer window approaches.
The former Genk, Aston Villa, and Fenerbahçe forward has had a nomadic career across Europe and Turkey, with his spell at Le Havre intended to re-establish him in a top-five league. While he has been a regular starter when fit, his goal return prior to this match had been modest, with his contributions often coming in cup competitions. This long-awaited league goal may prove to be a timely shop window display, potentially increasing his options as he enters the final months of his contract.
For Le Havre, the situation presents a dilemma. The club's sporting director, Jean-Michel Roussier, has previously expressed a desire to retain Samatta's services, valuing his experience and work rate. However, with financial constraints a reality for many Ligue 1 clubs outside the elite, agreeing on terms for a player who will be 32 by the start of next season has proven difficult. Letting him depart for nothing would represent a poor return on their initial investment, but a sale is now impossible.
The draw did little to ease the pressure on either side. Nice, under manager Francesco Farioli, have now won just once in their last ten league matches and sit perilously close to the bottom three. Their need for reinforcements, particularly in attack, is acute, though a move for Samatta is considered unlikely. For Le Havre, planning for next season must now accelerate, with identifying a potential replacement for Samatta becoming a priority should negotiations fail completely. His immediate focus will be on helping the club secure survival, but his long-term future appears to lie away from the Stade Océane.
