Daniel Maldini’s future is in doubt after Lazio decided against triggering the obligation to buy him from Atalanta following their defeat in the Coppa Italia final against Inter.
The 22-year-old forward joined Lazio on loan at the start of the season, with an agreement in place for a €14 million transfer should the club qualify for European competition.
Lazio’s 2-1 loss to Inter on Wednesday ended those hopes, and according to Cittaceleste, the club are now unlikely to pursue a permanent deal for Maldini.
Maldini has struggled for consistent playing time at Lazio, making 22 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals.
He previously spent time at AC Milan, where he is the son of legendary defender Paolo Maldini, but found opportunities limited and moved to Atalanta in August 2022.
At Atalanta, Maldini also found himself on the periphery, making only 14 Serie A appearances, prompting the loan move to Lazio in January 2023.
The collapse of the obligation to buy leaves Maldini’s long-term future uncertain, with a return to Atalanta the most likely outcome at present.
Lazio’s season has been deeply disappointing, marked by injuries, fan protests, and a failure to secure European football.
The Coppa Italia final defeat represents a significant financial blow for the club, as well as dashing their hopes of silverware.
This setback further complicates their transfer plans, and Maldini’s situation is just one of several issues facing president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani this summer.
With European qualification now off the table, Lazio will likely have a reduced budget for the transfer window, potentially impacting their ability to strengthen the squad.
Maldini’s situation may now see him attract interest from other Serie A clubs, or potentially even a move abroad.
