Lazio sign Juventus goalkeeper Edoardo Motta in permanent deal
Lazio have completed the permanent signing of young goalkeeper Edoardo Motta from Juventus. The 21-year-old, who joined the Biancocelesti in January for a reported fee of one million euros, has now made the move to the Italian capital a full-time arrangement after an initial loan period. The club confirmed the deal following Motta's impressive performances while deputising for first-choice Ivan Provedel.
Motta arrived at Lazio to serve as a backup following the departure of Luis Maximiano and the sale of Christos Mandas. His opportunity arose when Provedel suffered a shoulder injury, thrusting the young goalkeeper into the spotlight. His most notable contribution came in the Coppa Italia semi-final against Atalanta, where he saved four penalties in a shootout to send Lazio to the final, a performance that significantly raised his profile.
Prior to his move to Rome, Motta developed in the Juventus youth academy but never made a senior appearance for the club. He gained valuable first-team experience during a loan spell at Reggiana in Serie B last season, making 22 appearances. Since joining Lazio, he has made six Serie A appearances in addition to his Coppa Italia heroics, demonstrating his potential to compete at the highest level.
The transfer represents a strategic move for Lazio, who secure a promising Italian goalkeeper with room for development at a relatively modest cost. For Motta, the permanent deal offers a clear path to establish himself at a top Serie A club, learning from the experienced Provedel while pushing for more playing time. His immediate impact suggests he could be a long-term solution for the club between the posts.
For Juventus, the sale continues a trend of developing and selling talented academy products for profit. Motta's departure follows a well-trodden path for young players at the club seeking regular first-team football elsewhere. The fee, while not disclosed officially by either club, is understood to provide a useful financial return on their investment in his development.
The move underscores Lazio's commitment to building a competitive squad with a mix of experience and youth. With Provedel still the established number one, Motta provides reliable cover and a potential successor, solidifying a key position for the foreseeable future. His continued development will be closely watched, with many hoping he can follow in the footsteps of other Italian goalkeeping greats who emerged at a young age.
