Barcelona have officially signed winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for an initial fee of £69 million, with a potential further £8.6 million in add-ons, the club confirmed. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish champions and expressed his long-held desire to play for the club, stating it was a childhood dream. Gordon, capable of playing on the left wing or as a central attacker, reportedly spoke Spanish at his presentation.
This acquisition marks Barcelona’s first major signing of the summer transfer window, as they look to build upon their recent La Liga title win. The club is operating under the league’s 1:1 financial rule, allowing them to reinvest funds generated from player sales and wage savings directly into squad improvements. This rule provides increased financial flexibility as they aim to strengthen their squad for a Champions League challenge.
Conversely, Barcelona have confirmed the departure of Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract. The Polish striker scored 120 goals in 193 appearances during his four seasons with the club, leaving a significant void in the forward line. While rumours linked him with a move to Porto, those links were dismissed due to wage considerations, with Fenerbahce and Chicago Fire now potential destinations.
Barcelona are expected to pursue further additions, with a left-footed centre-back identified as a priority. Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva have also been mentioned as potential targets. The club is also evaluating the future of Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan from Manchester United, and Joao Cancelo, who was on loan from Al Hilal. Ansu Fati, who was also on loan, is anticipated to complete a permanent move to Monaco.
These moves signal a period of transition for Barcelona, as they aim to refine their squad and compete at the highest level in Europe.
