FC Barcelona have made a formal offer for Atlético de Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, club president Joan Laporta confirmed on Monday. The offer was presented despite Alvarez currently playing for Manchester City, with Laporta stating that the club had approached Atlético with a bid, acknowledging the player’s prior interest in a move to the Camp Nou even before his transfer to the English Premier League.
Laporta revealed that the offer remains on the table despite initial rejection from Atlético, emphasizing Barcelona’s continued determination to secure the Argentinian international. He stated the club informed Atlético that the proposal would stand regardless of other potential offers, and that Barcelona would not be dictated to by the Spanish capital club’s decision. According to Laporta, Barcelona has made its intentions clear and is prepared to continue negotiations should Atlético reconsider.
Alvarez has also attracted interest from Real Madrid, who publicly confirmed their own pursuit of the player recently. Prior to joining Manchester City, Alvarez reportedly expressed a preference for Barcelona, indicating his desire to play for the Catalan giants during the 2022 World Cup following Argentina’s victory over Austria. He has become a key player for Manchester City since his arrival, contributing significantly to their Premier League title wins under Pep Guardiola.
Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez comes as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season. The club is undergoing a period of rebuilding under Xavi Hernandez, and adding a player of Alvarez’s quality would be a significant step forward. While no fee has been disclosed, the move could represent a substantial investment for Barcelona, who have been working to improve their financial situation in recent years. Securing Alvarez would provide Xavi with another dynamic attacking option and further bolster Barcelona’s challenge for domestic and European honours.
