Barcelona are in advanced discussions with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, aiming to secure a deal worth €100 million plus add-ons, following their agreement to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for around €80 million. Sporting director Deco returned to Spain from London on Wednesday after establishing the framework for Gordon’s transfer, and immediately shifted focus to Alvarez.
Barcelona hope to finalize the Alvarez deal before the start of the World Cup on June 17th, when the Argentinian international is scheduled to begin his campaign against Algeria. Both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keen for a swift resolution, with Alvarez reportedly open to a move to the Camp Nou, though currently content at Atletico. He has previously expressed a preference for joining Barcelona, and has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
Deco was accompanied in talks with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, by agent Juanma Lopez. Lopez’s strong relationship with Atletico Madrid, stemming from his decade as a player for the club, is seen as a key asset in potentially smoothing over any complications in the negotiation process. Barcelona believe his presence will be crucial in ‘unlocking’ the deal.
Barcelona’s ability to finance these significant acquisitions is linked to an anticipated return to the 1:1 financial rule, which will allow them to reinvest all funds generated from player sales and wage savings directly into new signings. The departures of players like Marc-Andre ter Stegen on a free transfer and the expected sale of Ansu Fati are expected to facilitate this. Previously, the club was restricted to reinvesting only 60% of their income under La Liga’s financial regulations.
The speed and ambition of Barcelona’s summer transfer activity have been notable, despite ongoing financial concerns. Securing both Gordon and Alvarez would significantly bolster Xavi Hernandez’s squad, providing attacking reinforcements as they aim to compete domestically and in Europe. The addition of Alvarez would give Barcelona another potent goal threat, while Gordon’s arrival addresses a need for pace and creativity on the wing.
