Barcelona face summer clear-out to fund new signings
Barcelona are set for a significant squad overhaul this summer, with several high-profile players expected to depart as the club seeks to balance its books and fund incoming transfers. According to an analysis by FootballTransfers, the Catalan giants must adopt a 'one-in, one-out' policy to comply with La Liga's strict financial regulations, with a new centre-back and a striker among their primary targets. This necessity means the futures of a number of current squad members, including captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, are in doubt.
Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is considered surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou. The Germany international, who has been plagued by serious injuries in recent seasons, was informed he would be third choice this term and subsequently joined Girona on loan in January. His spell was again curtailed by injury after just two appearances, and the club is now expected to offload him permanently this summer. His departure would mark the end of a long and successful tenure, but his high wages and recent fitness record have made his position untenable.
In defence, Andreas Christensen faces an uncertain future as his contract expires this summer. The Danish centre-back has also struggled with injuries, which, while complicating Barcelona's defensive planning, have incidentally helped the club with player registration limits. FootballTransfers reports there have been conflicting signals over a potential extension, and it is considered likely Christensen will seek a new challenge after this season.
Midfielder Marc Casado, a product of Barcelona's La Masia academy, is reportedly determined to leave after failing to secure consistent minutes. The 22-year-old resisted strong interest from Premier League clubs like Chelsea and Wolves last summer but has now decided his future lies elsewhere, with the club not expected to block his exit. His sale would represent pure profit on Barcelona's accounts, a crucial factor given their financial constraints.
Forward Ansu Fati, once heralded as the heir to Lionel Messi, appears set for a permanent exit. Currently on loan at AS Monaco, reports cited by FootballTransfers indicate the Ligue 1 club is now willing to trigger its purchase option for the winger, despite a mixed season impacted by fitness issues. His departure would conclude a once-promising chapter that has been derailed by persistent injury problems.
Perhaps the most surprising development concerns Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker's contract also expires this summer, and Barcelona had been actively scouting for his replacement. However, with top target Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid deemed unattainable, the club has opened talks over an extension. Club president Joan Laporta is pushing for the 37-year-old to accept reduced terms, though initial reports suggest Lewandowski was unimpressed with the first offer. His potential stay would represent a significant shift in the club's summer strategy.
