Barcelona have made contact with the representatives of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero as they explore a potential summer move, according to reports from Sport. The Catalan club is monitoring the situation of several Spurs players, with the Argentine centre-back emerging as a key target amid Tottenham's ongoing relegation battle in the Premier League. The club's interest comes as they seek defensive reinforcements while operating within financial constraints.
Spurs are currently 18th in the table, two points from safety, and face the prospect of relegation to the Championship. Such an outcome could force the London club to offload high-earning players, a scenario being watched closely by several European clubs. Barcelona's Director of Football Deco has identified Romero as a potential alternative to primary target Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan, should a deal for the Italian prove unattainable.
The 28-year-old Romero is described by the report as fitting the profile Barcelona are seeking: a leader, experienced, and strong in one-on-one defensive situations. Romero has previously expressed a desire to play in Spain, having been linked with Atletico Madrid in the past, though that interest cooled after Atletico signed David Hancko last summer. Barcelona's approach is reportedly in its early stages, with the club making their interest known to the player's camp.
Barcelona's broader strategy involves adding a centre-back, a centre-forward, and a left wigner this summer, provided they return to compliance with La Liga's salary limit. Their focus remains on market opportunities rather than major expenditures. Romero, who joined Tottenham permanently in 2022 after an initial loan from Atalanta, has been a mainstay in their defence when fit, also earning 31 caps for Argentina.
The report notes that Romero is not the only Tottenham player on Barcelona's radar, with the club also having tracked defender Micky van de Ven and midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who chose Spurs over Barcelona in January. Former target Xavi Simons is also at Tottenham but is ruled out long-term through injury. A move for Romero would signal a shift in Barcelona's defensive planning and provide experience to a backline that has relied heavily on younger players in recent seasons.
