Arsenal’s pursuit of Anthony Gordon has encountered a setback, as Bayern Munich are reportedly prioritizing the Newcastle United forward and are not actively pursuing alternative targets, according to Christian Falk of BILD. The 25-year-old has become a key player for Newcastle since his move from Everton in January 2023, scoring 39 goals in all competitions for the Magpies.
Arsenal have long been linked with Gordon, with BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel reporting on their sustained interest. However, Bayern Munich have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature, with reports suggesting Gordon is close to agreeing personal terms on a five-year contract with the German club. A fee remains the sticking point, with Newcastle reportedly seeking around €86million (£75m) for the England international.
Recent speculation had suggested Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere as a potential fallback option for Bayern. However, Falk clarified that the club is not currently in negotiations with the Belgian forward, stating, “Bayern are currently negotiating with Anthony Gordon, and the talks with Newcastle have already started.” De Ketelaere has experienced a dip in form this season, scoring five goals in 40 appearances for Atalanta, a decline from his previous two seasons.
Gordon himself has recently been sidelined, missing Newcastle’s last four matches, initially due to a hip flexor injury. Manager Eddie Howe hinted at the possibility of Gordon’s departure when speaking ahead of Newcastle’s match against West Ham United, acknowledging that the club is considering the future. He stated that the team has performed well in Gordon’s absence and alluded to a “partial view to the future” influencing recent team selection. While Howe confirmed no updates from his end, the situation suggests Newcastle are preparing for a potential sale.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continue their Premier League title push, facing Burnley on Monday. The outcome of the Gordon transfer will likely influence Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy, as they seek to strengthen their attacking options.
