Bayern Munich set Bundesliga scoring record with 100th league goal
Bayern Munich have become the first club in Bundesliga history to score 100 goals in the first 28 matches of a season. The milestone was reached during a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory away to Freiburg on Saturday, which also saw the German champions set a new league record for the earliest achievement of a century of goals.
According to statistics compiled by Stats Foot, Bayern are also the first team across Europe's top five leagues—England's Premier League, Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga, and France's Ligue 1—to hit the 100-goal mark this season. The club's relentless attacking form has propelled them to the top of the Bundesliga table as they pursue another domestic title.
This is only the third time in Bayern Munich's history that the team has reached 100 goals at this stage of a campaign. The previous instances came in the 1971-72 season, when they finished with 101 goals, and the 2019-20 season, when they also reached 100. The current squad is now poised to break the club's all-time seasonal record, potentially as early as their next match against FC St. Pauli on April 11.
The record is particularly notable as it has been achieved in the absence of star striker Harry Kane, who has been sidelined with an injury. Manager Vincent Kompany has overseen an adaptable attack, with the team demonstrating remarkable resilience by coming from behind to win six different league matches this season, including the victory in Freiburg.
Kompany will now be hoping to reintegrate Kane ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie later this month. The Belgian manager recently told reporters he expects the return of one of his key figures before the European fixture, though he did not explicitly name the player. Bayern's depth in attack has been a defining feature of their campaign, allowing them to maintain their prolific output despite injuries.
The record underscores Bayern's domestic dominance and their status as the highest-scoring team in Europe's major leagues this season. It places them ahead of other attacking powerhouses like Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain in the goalscoring charts. For Freiburg, the match was another example of the difficulty in containing Bayern's multifaceted threat, even when taking an early lead.
As the season enters its decisive phase, Bayern's firepower presents a significant challenge for all remaining opponents, both in Germany and in Europe. The pursuit of a historic goalscoring tally adds another layer to their quest for silverware, with the team aiming to convert their extraordinary offensive production into trophies.
