Bayern Munich complete signing of Luis Diaz from Real Madrid
Bayern Munich have signed Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Real Madrid, the clubs have confirmed. The transfer, for an undisclosed fee, sees the 29-year-old move to the Bundesliga champions on a long-term contract, bringing an end to his two-season spell in the Spanish capital.
The move comes just months after Diaz scored a dramatic late goal against Bayern for Real Madrid in last season's Champions League quarter-final, a tie the German side ultimately won 4-3 on the night. That performance, according to sources close to the negotiations, reinforced Bayern's long-standing interest in the player. Diaz joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in the summer of 2024 but struggled to secure a consistent starting role under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, often competing with the likes of Rodrygo and new signing Michael Olise for minutes on the flank.
For Bayern, the acquisition addresses a direct need for proven quality in wide areas following the departures of Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman in recent transfer windows. Diaz brings a blend of pace, direct dribbling, and a capacity for decisive moments, as evidenced by his 12 goals across all competitions last season despite his intermittent starting role. His experience in the Premier League, La Liga, and at the highest level of European competition was a key factor in the Bavarian club's pursuit.
The transfer represents a significant piece of business for Real Madrid as they continue to reshape their squad following a trophyless 2025-26 campaign. The fee, reported by Sky Sports Deutschland to be in the region of €50 million, provides valuable funds as the club looks to balance the books and invest in younger targets. Diaz's departure also clears a pathway for more minutes for Brazilian youngster Endrick and may facilitate a more permanent role for Arda Guler in the attacking midfield positions.
For Diaz, the move offers a fresh start and the promise of a central role in a team that will be among the favourites for the Bundesliga title and will expect a deep run in the Champions League. He joins a Bayern attack featuring Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, with new manager Vincent Kompany likely to build his system around their offensive threats. The Colombian international will be expected to hit the ground running as Bayern aim to reclaim domestic dominance from Bayer Leverkusen.
