Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for United States international Folarin Balogun, currently playing for AS Monaco, according to a report in Bild. The German publication indicates that Dortmund view Balogun as a potential replacement for Serhou Guirassy, whose future at Signal Iduna Park is uncertain.
Dortmund are currently anticipating Guirassy will remain with the club, but acknowledge the possibility of his departure should a more prestigious offer arrive this summer. Guirassy’s contract reportedly includes a release clause of €38 million, which could facilitate a transfer. The club is also pursuing Hoffenheim forward Fisnik Asllani as their primary target, with sporting director Ole Book familiar with the player from their shared time at Elversberg.
However, competition from RB Leipzig for Asllani is intensifying, and the Kosovo international is expected to make a decision on his future imminently. Asllani also has a release clause of €30 million. Should Dortmund fail to secure Asllani’s signature and Guirassy ultimately leave, Balogun would become a more prominent target.
Balogun has impressed during his appearances for the United States national team, scoring three goals at the recent World Cup. He is currently contracted to Monaco until 2028, having joined the Ligue 1 club in 2023. Prior to his move to France, the forward came through the Arsenal academy, though opportunities in the first team were limited. He spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Middlesbrough, scoring three goals in 18 Championship appearances.
Balogun’s recent form and potential availability could make him an attractive option for Dortmund, particularly if their forward line undergoes changes in the coming months. A move to the Bundesliga would provide Balogun with a platform to continue his development and compete at a high level, potentially solidifying his place as a key player for the USMNT.
