Club Bruges have announced the signing of goalkeeper Yann Sommer on a contract until 2029, following the expiration of his deal with Inter Milan. The 37-year-old Switzerland international arrives at the Belgian champions after three seasons in Italy, where he won two Serie A titles and reached the Champions League final in 2025.
Sommer’s move to Bruges marks his fourth different league, having previously played in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. He established himself as a key figure during a nine-year spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach, making 335 appearances for the Bundesliga club. His consistent performances in Germany earned him a reputation as one of the league’s most reliable goalkeepers, and prompted his transfer to Inter in 2023.
At Inter Milan, Sommer quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper, displacing Samir Handanovic and playing a crucial role in their Scudetto-winning campaigns. He provided stability and experience to the Nerazzurri’s defence, contributing to their success both domestically and in Europe. His departure from Inter leaves a void in their squad, though the club are expected to pursue other goalkeeping options.
Club Bruges were seeking a replacement for Simon Mignolet, who recently announced his retirement. Sommer is expected to immediately slot into the starting lineup for the Belgian side, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the Jan Breydel Stadium. The signing demonstrates Bruges’ ambition to remain competitive both in Belgium and on the European stage.
Sommer has earned 94 caps for Switzerland, representing his country at multiple major tournaments, including the World Cup and European Championships. His international experience will be invaluable for Club Bruges, as they navigate challenging fixtures in both the Belgian Pro League and European competitions. This transfer provides Sommer with a new challenge in a different league, and allows him to continue his career at a high level.
