His coaching career, which saw him lauded as a tactical mastermind, was defined by major successes across the continent. He achieved legendary status at clubs like Galatasaray and Besiktas in Turkey, and Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, where he built a dominant side and won the UEFA Cup in 2009. Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Besiktas were among the first to pay tribute on social media following the news.

Lucescu returned to manage the Romanian national team in the summer of 2024, a role he held until his passing. The federation noted his legacy is "difficult to match in the history of the sport." The federation has suspended the process of appointing a new national team manager and has called for a minute's silence at all upcoming matches in his honor.
