Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces renewed scrutiny over his position at Anfield after Fenway Sports Group dismissed Alex Cora, the manager of their Boston Red Sox baseball team. The move by Liverpool's ownership group has been interpreted in some quarters as a demonstration of their ruthless approach to underperformance, casting a shadow over Slot's future despite a difficult season. The Dutchman has overseen a trophyless campaign following a record summer spend, with the club currently fourth in the Premier League and out of all cup competitions.
According to reports from the United States, FSG confirmed the dismissal of Cora after the Red Sox slumped to the bottom of the American League East. Cora had led the franchise to a World Series title in 2018, but his past success did not secure his position. While the sports are different, the decision is seen by some observers as a signal of the ownership's low tolerance for failing to meet objectives, a principle that applies across their portfolio. This development arrives amid persistent questions in England about Slot's security, despite the club's public backing earlier in the season.
Slot's first year in charge has been challenging. Liverpool invested approximately £440 million in the squad last summer, the largest outlay in the club's history, with the aim of building a dynasty after their Premier League title win. Instead, a poor autumn run saw the team lose nine of twelve games across all competitions, a slump from which they never fully recovered to challenge for major honours. The failure to compete has led to growing discontent among sections of the fanbase and increased external pressure.
Adding to the narrative, former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has publicly suggested the club should consider a change. In an interview with Empire of the Kop, Pennant stated that while he would back Slot if he remains, he believes the fans will quickly turn if results do not improve next season. He also named Xabi Alonso, the highly-regarded Bayer Leverkusen manager, as his preferred candidate for the role should a vacancy arise. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has stated that, according to his information, Liverpool have not approached Alonso since discussions prior to Slot's appointment, and the Spaniard remains focused on his future move to Real Madrid.
Despite the speculation, the general expectation within the football industry, as reported by several outlets including TEAMtalk's Graeme Bailey, is that Slot will continue into the next season. He is said to be actively planning for a significant summer transfer window, with the club needing to sell players before they can buy, and is focused on returning Liverpool to title contention. The immediate pressure, therefore, appears to stem from the symbolic nature of FSG's decision in Boston rather than any concrete indication of a change at Anfield. The coming months will be critical for Slot to reassert his authority and vision for the club.
