Mainz 05 have moved to solidify their squad following the confirmation of their Bundesliga status for another season, announcing contract extensions for Stefan Bell, Danny da Costa, and captain Silvan Widmer. The club secured their league standing with a 2-1 victory over FC St. Pauli, avoiding a tense final matchday scenario.
Sporting director Niko Bungert has been focused on future planning since the club’s safety was confirmed, and the extensions represent a commitment to experience and leadership within the team. While Mainz are safe, 1. FC Heidenheim remain in a relegation battle, a situation coach Urs Fischer stated his side will not influence, focusing instead on achieving the best possible performance in their final match. He emphasized that Mainz are not responsible for the situation of other clubs, having successfully navigated a similar struggle themselves.
Stefan Bell, a product of Mainz’s youth academy since 2007, has become a key figure at the club, accumulating over 330 appearances. The veteran defender featured in 23 games across all competitions this season. Bungert described Bell as “an institution” at Mainz 05, praising his consistent importance both on and off the pitch, and his deep understanding of the club’s values. Bell himself expressed his desire to continue contributing to the team’s success.
Danny da Costa’s contract was automatically extended upon securing Bundesliga survival, while Silvan Widmer, who has captained the side this season, will also remain with the club. Widmer has played 39 times in all competitions this season and Bungert highlighted his leadership and performance during a challenging period for the club. The extensions of these three players provide stability and experience as Mainz look to build for the future.
However, the future of Nadiem Amiri remains uncertain. The playmaker has been linked with a move to Turkish champions Galatasaray Istanbul, and recently offered a cryptic response when asked if his recent home match against Union Berlin was his last for Mainz. Amiri is currently under contract until 2028, but speculation surrounding his departure continues.
