Le Mans, recently promoted to Ligue 1, are pursuing Marsoni Sambu from Belgian side Dender, according to L’Équipe. The 30-year-old right-back is reportedly favouring a return to France despite interest from a Greek club and a previous offer from Le Mans last summer.
Sambu began his professional career with SO Cholet in France’s National division during the 2020-2021 season before moving to Belgium. He has since amassed over 100 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League, establishing himself as a consistent performer in the Belgian top flight. His experience playing regularly at a professional level makes him an attractive option for Le Mans as they prepare for their first season back in Ligue 1.
Last summer, Le Mans initially targeted Sambu, but he ultimately joined Dender due to a financial disagreement with RWDM Brussels, then owned by John Textor. He currently remains under contract with Dender until 2027, but the club are prepared to consider offers. L’Équipe reports that a Greek club has already submitted a financial proposal for the player, but Sambu is prioritizing a move back to France.
The potential transfer would provide Le Mans with a seasoned defender to bolster their options on the right side of defence. Sambu’s familiarity with French football, albeit at a lower level, could aid his adaptation to Ligue 1, and his experience in Belgium suggests he is capable of competing at a higher standard. This move could prove vital for Le Mans as they look to establish themselves in the French top tier.
