Atalanta's Under-23 side has qualified for the Serie C promotion playoffs for the third consecutive season, securing its place with a draw against Catania on the final day of the regular season. The team, led by coach Salvatore Bocchetti, will face Casertana in the first round, needing a victory within regulation time to advance. This consistent success underscores the unique structure and philosophy of the club's reserve team project, which relies heavily on academy products rather than experienced journeymen.
According to a detailed report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Atalanta U23's approach differs markedly from other Serie C reserve sides. While teams like Inter U23 and Juventus Next Gen have incorporated older, experienced players to navigate the league, Atalanta has insisted on using 'overage' players who are under 25 and developed within its own academy. This season, the squad featured players like Francesco Panada, Tommaso Bergonzi, Alessandro Cortinovis, and Tommaso Ghislandi, all of whom have been with the club's youth system for over 17 years.
The squad is also notably young, with an average age of 21.1, reportedly the lowest in the entire Serie C. The roster includes several very young talents, such as 2007-born players Idele and Navarro—the latter arriving from Barcelona—and 2008-born Stefano Steffanoni. This commitment to youth development comes with inherent risks, including the appointment of Bocchetti, a coach seen as a prospect himself, following the successful tenure of Giovanni Modesto.
On the pitch, several players have shone and are now considered prospects for Gian Piero Gasperini's senior Atalanta side. Forward Dominic Vavassori, born in 2005, leads the way with eight goals this season and has already trained with the first team under former coach Gian Piero Gasperini's successor, Raffaele Palladino. Other standouts include midfielder Alberto Manzoni, also with eight goals, defender Relja Obric—another called up by Palladino—and goalkeeper Paolo Vismara.
New arrivals have also made an immediate impact. Midfielder Levak and forward Misitano, both 2006 and 2005-born respectively and signed from Roma's Primavera squad last summer, each contributed seven goals during the campaign. Following the final match, Bocchetti expressed immense pride in his team's achievement, highlighting their fight through a long and difficult season in the more challenging southern Girone C.
The consistent playoff qualification and the emergence of clear first-team prospects validate Atalanta's model of using its U23 side primarily as an advanced finishing school for its academy. As the playoffs begin, the focus remains on competitive success, but the broader project's health is already evident, providing a steady pipeline of young talent groomed within the club's own philosophy.
