Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as contenders to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, dealing a potential blow to Liverpool’s transfer plans, according to reports from Foot Mercato in France. The 19-year-old has quickly established himself as a highly sought-after talent after a breakout season in the Bundesliga.
Diomande scored 12 goals and provided eight assists for Leipzig last term, attracting attention from several top European clubs. Liverpool had identified the Ivory Coast international as a key target to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure, as reported by The Athletic. However, PSG’s recent Champions League triumph and subsequent ambition to refresh their squad have altered the landscape.
Following their penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final last Saturday, manager Luis Enrique publicly stated the need for squad renewal. He told TNT Sports that PSG must “renew the squad, because now we have to play for the position and get new players.” This backing from Enrique appears to have empowered the club to pursue ambitious targets like Diomande.
To facilitate a move for Diomande, PSG are reportedly considering offloading Goncalo Ramos and Lee Kang-In, according to Spanish outlet SPORT. The club aims to free up funds and create space within the squad for new additions. Diomande is currently valued at €100 million (£86m) according to The i Paper, with the transfer window officially opening on June 15th.
Separately, Liverpool are preparing to enter formal talks with Andoni Iraola regarding their vacant head coach position, as reported by BBC Sport. The Reds dismissed Arne Slot last weekend after a disappointing season that saw them suffer 19 defeats across all competitions. Iraola, who recently departed Bournemouth after guiding them to a Europa League qualifying spot, is considered a strong candidate due to his existing relationship with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes. He has also attracted interest from Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen.
