Real Madrid monitoring Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeneß for coaching role
Real Madrid are monitoring VfB Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß as a potential candidate for their managerial position, according to a report from the German publication Sport Bild. The Spanish giants are assessing options ahead of an expected summer change, with interim boss Álvaro Arbeloa unlikely to be retained after stepping in following Xabi Alonso's dismissal earlier this year.
The report indicates that the 43-year-old Hoeneß is on a list of candidates being considered by the Real Madrid hierarchy. No formal contact has yet been made with the coach or his club. Hoeneß is under contract with Stuttgart until 2028, and crucially, that agreement does not contain a release clause. This means Real Madrid would need to negotiate and pay a significant compensation fee to Stuttgart should they decide to pursue the German coach.
Sport Bild suggests Real Madrid's serious interest was sparked during a Champions League encounter in September 2024. Despite Real Madrid winning that match 3-1 with two late goals, Stuttgart's performance and tactical philosophy against the tournament favourites left a strong impression on the Spanish club's decision-makers. Hoeneß has built a formidable reputation since taking charge at Stuttgart in April 2023, transforming the team's style and fortunes.
His work at the Mercedes-Benz Arena has not gone unnoticed elsewhere in Europe. Prior to this link with Real Madrid, Hoeneß had been associated with vacancies at Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, highlighting his rising stock in the coaching market. The potential move represents a significant step for Hoeneß, whose previous head coaching experience has been confined to the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim and Stuttgart.
For Stuttgart, the interest from one of the world's most prestigious clubs is a testament to their project's success but also poses a threat to its continuity. Losing their architect would be a major blow as they look to establish themselves as consistent top-four contenders in Germany and in European competition. For Real Madrid, Hoeneß represents a younger, progressive option who has proven capable of implementing an attractive, effective style of play with a squad operating on a comparatively modest budget.
The situation remains in its early stages, with no official approach reported. Real Madrid are expected to evaluate several candidates in the coming months as they plan for a pivotal summer, with the future of the coaching position at the Bernabéu one of the most closely watched sagas in the sport.
