Stade Rennais have completed the signing of Gonçalo Oliveira from Benfica’s reserve team on a five-year contract, the French club confirmed. The transfer fee is reported to be around €3.5 million. The 19-year-old central defender joins Rennes as the club looks to bolster its defensive options ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 season.
Oliveira arrives at Roazhon Park after a promising season with Benfica B, where he made 24 appearances and scored two goals. He captained the reserve side, leading them to the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League before being eliminated by Club Brugge 3-1. The Portuguese youth international has represented his country at various youth levels, demonstrating his potential on the international stage.
Rennes finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season, conceding 50 goals – equal to the seventh-worst defensive record in the league alongside Paris FC. Manager Franck Haise will be hoping Oliveira’s arrival will help to address these defensive vulnerabilities. The club has already added Adrien Thomasson and Issa Soumaré to their squad this summer, signalling an intent to strengthen across the pitch.
Oliveira is a left-footed defender, adding balance to Rennes’ backline. He is known for his composure in possession and ability to play out from the back, qualities that align with the modern demands of the game. The player himself expressed his delight at joining Rennes, describing the club as “a great French club with a strong history.”
The signing of Oliveira represents a strategic investment in a young player with significant potential. He is expected to compete for a place in the first team and contribute to Rennes’ ambitions of improving their league position and challenging for European qualification. His arrival provides depth and competition in a key area of the pitch for Haise’s side.
