Manchester United’s pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has received a boost, with reports suggesting his wage demands will not be a stumbling block in a potential transfer. This development comes as United seek to rebuild their midfield ahead of the upcoming season, having already agreed a £35million deal for Atalanta’s Ederson.
Tchouameni has been identified as a key target to replace Casemiro, who departed for Saudi Arabia last year, and would represent a significant addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad. United are reportedly prepared to make the Frenchman one of their highest earners, though not at the level of players like Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs stated that the club would be willing to match Tchouameni’s current salary.
The potential for a deal is further complicated by Real Madrid’s own transfer plans, specifically their interest in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez. According to Jacobs, if Madrid sign Fernandez, they may be more willing to allow Tchouameni to leave. Jose Mourinho is also reportedly keen on bringing Fernandez to Madrid, with talks expected to begin between the Spanish giants and Chelsea.
United are estimated to need to offer around £70million to secure Tchouameni’s signature, a fee that could prove to be a worthwhile investment given his reputation as one of the world’s leading defensive midfielders. The 24-year-old joined Real Madrid from Monaco in 2022 and has become a regular in the Spanish side, though his role has been somewhat inconsistent. He has 17 caps for the French national team.
Alongside Tchouameni, United are also considering other midfield options, including Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, as well as West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, though Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the latter. The club’s ambition is to secure three midfield signings this summer to provide competition and depth in that area of the pitch.
