Stade Rennais have completed the signing of 19-year-old defender Gonçalo Oliveira from Benfica’s reserve team, the French club announced on Saturday. The Portuguese centre-back has signed a long-term contract with Rennes, extending to 2031.
The move sees Oliveira leave Benfica, where he was developing within their youth system, to gain first-team experience in France’s Ligue 1. While financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, the length of the contract suggests Rennes have high hopes for the young defender’s potential.
Rennes have been active in the transfer window, having already secured the signings of Adrien Thomasson and Issa Soumaré. This addition of Oliveira further strengthens their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season. The club is clearly focused on building a competitive squad capable of challenging for European qualification.
Notably, Rennes announced the signing with a unique campaign alongside the French Blood Establishment (EFS), incorporating a clip promoting blood donation during the summer months. The club highlighted the need for 10,000 daily donations in France to support a million people, and emphasized the life-saving impact of a single donation.
Oliveira is a robust defender who will likely compete for a place in the centre of Rennes’ defence. He will be looking to quickly adapt to the demands of French football and contribute to the team’s success. This transfer represents an opportunity for the young Portuguese player to showcase his talent on a larger stage and develop into a key player for Rennes.
