Toulouse FC Women crowned champions, secure promotion to French top flight
Toulouse FC's women's team has been crowned champion of France's second division and secured promotion to the top flight, ending a thirteen-year absence from the elite. The club confirmed the achievement this weekend following a 2-0 home victory over Thonon Évian Grand Genève, coupled with results elsewhere going in their favor.
With 18 matches played in the season, Toulouse has dominated the division, boasting the best attack with 39 goals scored and the sturdiest defense, having conceded only 11 times. The team now holds an unassailable twelve-point lead over second-place Saint-Malo with games still to play, mathematically sealing the title.
The promotion marks a significant milestone for the club, mirroring the achievement of the Toulouse men's team, which returned to Ligue 1 in 2022. The women's side, known as Les Violettes, will now prepare for a return to the Division 1 Féminine for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
Two players have been instrumental in this successful campaign. Striker Selen Altunkulak, the division's top scorer with 17 goals, and teammate Louna Lapassouse, who has contributed 12 goals, were both on the scoresheet in the decisive victory that confirmed the promotion. Their prolific partnership has been the foundation of Toulouse's offensive prowess throughout the year.
The club celebrated the title on its official social media channels, posting "CHAMPIONNES" alongside images of the squad. The achievement represents a rapid ascent and growing investment in the women's game at the club, which will now face established powers like Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, and Paris FC in the top tier next season.
Promotion to Division 1 Féminine will bring increased visibility, greater financial distribution from the league, and more challenging fixtures. It poses a new test for the squad and management, who must now prepare to compete against France's best. The focus will shift to summer recruitment and pre-season planning as Toulouse aims to establish itself as a permanent fixture in the elite.
