Werder Bremen are in discussions with Romano Schmid regarding a contract extension, the club confirmed to BILD. The Austrian international is entering the final year of his current deal with the Bundesliga side, having joined in 2019.
Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s Head of first team football, stated the club’s desire to retain Schmid beyond his existing contract. “Of course, it is our ambition not to let a player like Romano go as a free agent,” Niemeyer told BILD, indicating that negotiations are set to become more focused in the near future. He added that Bremen are prepared to offer improved terms to the 26-year-old.
Schmid has previously been linked with moves away from the Weserstadion, but there is currently no indication he will leave this summer. Niemeyer acknowledged the need for a suitable replacement should an agreement not be reached, highlighting the player’s importance to the squad. The club are keen to avoid losing a key asset without receiving a transfer fee.
Schmid’s market value is currently estimated at €15 million by Transfermarkt. He has become a regular for Bremen, contributing goals and assists from an attacking midfield position. He also made a significant contribution on the international stage, scoring Austria’s first goal at the 2022 World Cup during their 3-1 victory over Jordan.
Securing Schmid to a new contract would provide stability to Bremen’s attacking options, while failing to do so could force the club to seek a replacement in a competitive transfer market. The outcome of these negotiations will be a key indicator of Bremen’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
