Rafael Leao’s future at AC Milan is increasingly uncertain as the Portuguese forward risks being dropped from the starting lineup and could be sold at the end of the season, according to reports in Italy. Once a dynamic talent, Leao has struggled to consistently deliver for the Rossoneri, leading to frustration within the club.
Leao, who will turn 27 next month, joined Milan in 2019 after a spell in France and following legal issues in Portugal that initially followed his departure from Sporting CP. During his time in Milan, he has won a Serie A title and reached the Champions League semi-finals, and recently became a father to twins. Despite these personal milestones, his form has declined, with his last goal coming over two months ago. Recent performances against Verona, Juventus, and Sassuolo have drawn criticism from fans and prompted questions about his commitment.
Manager Massimiliano Allegri has publicly defended Leao, emphasizing his dynamism, but reports suggest the coach is now prepared to bench him due to a perceived lack of effort and application. While Leao isn’t expected to contribute heavily defensively, Allegri demands greater commitment from his players, something the forward has reportedly failed to provide consistently. Leao has also been criticized for his reactions to substitutions and his reluctance to address his form in post-match interviews.
In 289 appearances for Milan, 219 as a starter, Leao has scored 80 goals, only two of which came from penalties. He was named Serie A’s best player during Milan’s title-winning 2022 season and was a key figure in their Champions League run the following year. It has emerged that Chelsea made a written offer of €100 million for Leao at that time, but the transfer never materialized. Despite attempts by managers like Fonseca, Conceição, and Allegri to unlock his potential, Leao has struggled to maintain a consistent level of performance. His record as a central striker is also underwhelming, with only nine goals scored in that position.
Despite a contract that runs until 2028, with a salary of €7 million per season, Milan are prepared to consider offers for Leao. The club may even actively encourage potential buyers to emerge, particularly as Leao prepares to join the Portugal national team for the upcoming Copa America. His international form has also been inconsistent, with only five goals in 47 appearances. A strong showing in the tournament could potentially increase his value, preventing Milan from being forced to sell him for a reduced fee. A release clause of €170 million is considered unrealistic, with a more likely valuation in the range of €50-60 million.
