Rafael Leao has publicly expressed his desire to leave AC Milan, stating he feels he has given everything he can to the club and seeks a new challenge in a different league. The Portuguese forward’s comments, made to television media in his home country, come amidst a period of upheaval at Milan following a disappointing end to the season and changes in the club’s leadership.
Leao’s statements were reinforced by further remarks on Friday, where he specifically mentioned a desire to play in the Premier League should the opportunity arise. He also revealed he played through a pubalgia injury for four to five months, often in a position that did not suit his strengths. These declarations followed a recent incident during a Portugal friendly against Chile, where Leao was sent off for a physical altercation with Ivan Roman, sparked by verbal aggression towards teammate Joao Cancelo.
The situation mirrors the instability currently surrounding Milan. The club finished the season poorly, with Leao failing to score after March 1st, contributing to a broader team collapse. Following this downturn, owner Gerry Cardinale reportedly indicated a willingness to sell Leao for €100 million, questioning his character. Leao reportedly did not take kindly to these comments, and his subsequent public pronouncements are seen as potentially depreciating his market value.
According to reports, Leao’s value has plummeted from the previously cited figures of €175 million (his release clause) or Cardinale’s €100 million valuation, now estimated at around €50 million. Potential suitors, primarily from England and Spain, may offer between €35-40 million for the player, who currently earns €7 million per year in wages. The red card received during the international friendly is expected to result in a one-match suspension, but Leao hopes to showcase his abilities on a larger stage at the upcoming World Cup. The appointment of a new Milan coach is anticipated, and the coming weeks will determine whether these signals culminate in Leao’s departure from the club.
